3,000 Calls to Cops Not Enough for Florida Man

Stop calling the cops unless you have a real emergency. 

That was the simple rule a judge ordered Tampa resident Keith Lukas to follow, after Lukas placed some 3,000 non-emergency calls to dispatchers at the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

But apparently, that simple rule was too much for Lukas, who was arrested on contempt charges and sentenced to 30 days in jail, after making yet another call. The 43-year-old Tampa man was arrested June 26, jail records indicate.

Dispatchers say Lukas would hang up the phone or harass them with a slew of profanities.

Lukas found himself in hot water back in February when dispatchers and deputies said they couldn’t take it any longer. He pleaded no contest to a complaint filed against him by the sheriff’s office, The Tampa Tribune reported. His calls earned him probation and an order from a judge that he not call the sheriff’s office again unless he had a legitimate reason to do so.

Back in February, sheriff’s officials said Lukas’ calls were harassing and abusive. They worried his interference with dispatchers would shave valuable seconds off response time when real emergency calls came in.

Lt. Darrin Darrow, who oversees the sheriff’s office communication center, told MyFoxTampaBay back in February that Lukas would call “multiple times, 20 times a night … never having a legitimate issue.”

Lukas’ spate of harassing phone calls earned him national attention back in February, when his story made headlines in the New York Daily News and the Huffington Post.

Lukas remained in the Hillsborough County Jail without bond on June 29.
