High School Football Schedule Pushed Back By RNC

Aug. 31 games for Plant, Robinson and other Hillsborough County schools are being moved to Saturday, Sept. 1 because of security issues and the Republican National Convention.

The Friday night lights will have to move to Saturday for a weekend in August thanks to the Republican National Convention. All high school football games in Hillsborough County scheduled for Friday, Aug. 31 will be pushed back a day when the RNC comes to Tampa, the school district announced. That means the following games will be played at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1: The RNC will be in town from Aug. 27-30, and the district announced in June it would not hold any sporting events that week.  "Concerns were raised about security for Friday night football games, because local law enforcement officers likely still would be on RNC-related assignments, and would not be available to serve as off-duty security," district spokesperson Linda …

Bostick is Plant High Football's Last Line of Defense

The Panthers will have plenty of new faces in the defensive secondary in 2012, but one will look familiar — rising senior Paris Bostick, who missed several games last year.

Last year may have been a championship season for the Plant High football team, but rising senior Paris Bostick had a rocky 2011 campaign. Bostick only participated in a little more than half of the Panthers' games last season. An early-season high ankle sprain, followed by a high ankle sprain on the other side, forced the safety to miss four games. Bostick also was later kept out of Plant's Class 8A state championship victory over Miramar for disciplinary reasons. "That was so painful," said Bostick. "You work all that time and then not be able to play in that game." The sting still has not worn off. "I realize I made a mistake, and I learned from it," he said. "Everything is focused on football now." The Panthers were able to get by last…

Plant High Quarterback Competition Loaded This Spring

The Plant Panthers will have another race to determine their 2012 starting quarterback, and this time there are four horses instead of two.

Last season, junior Aaron Banks and senior James Few battled it out for that starting wink as Plant High's quarterback. Few was an early favorite, thanks to his size and seniority and by the start of the regular season, Few was the clear-cut starter. Banks still found his way onto the field, as he actually provided a nice change of pace to Few being more of a runner. This year is a different story. Banks will most likely hold the inside track. "He has a lot of experience in our system and is familiar with the nomenclature we use," said head coach Robert Weiner. "He's also taken his game to the next level." "This year, I think I grasp the offense a little better," Banks said. "I'm able to focus in on direct things, while last year I was …

Video: Plant High Panthers Rally in Downtown for State Championship

The City hosted a victory rally to honor Plant High School state championship football and girls cross country teams on Monday, Jan. 30.

The Panthers invaded City Hall Plaza in downtown on Monday, Jan. 30, as the city hosted a victory rally to celebrate two Plant High School state championship teams. “It’s an exciting time,” said Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn, “I can’t tell you how proud we are for what you have done this year, but more importantly what you do everyday.” Plant High football and girls cross country teams won state titles in 2011. “This was our 10th state championship, we qualified for the state championship for 25 years in a row, and in those 25 years, we’ve been in the top five 21 times,” said girls cross country coach Roy Harrison. “It takes a lot of work, a lot of dedication, and I am just so proud to coach them.” A small team of officials and guests, which …

Plant High's Antonio Crawford to Play for Miami

The Panthers' standout defensive back has dropped his commitment to Georgia Tech and will play for the Hurricanes, TBO.com reports.

Plant High defensive back Antonio Crawford, a starter on the Panthers' Class 8A state championship team this past season, intends to commit to the University of Miami, TBO.com reports. Crawford said he was backing out of a commitment to Georgia Tech made last summer to instead play for the Hurricanes after visiting their Coral Gables campus. "I really bonded with the players and coaches down there and had a good time," Crawford told TBO.com. "It felt right. I just needed to talk it over with my family and coach (Robert) Weiner before I made my final decision." Crawford told Patch in August that Plant's loss to St. Thomas Aquinas in the 2010 state final helped open his eyes and molded him into more of a team player. “Now, I think I’ve …

Plant Panthers Football 2011: Year in Review

The bar is always set high for Plant High football, and 2011 presented some unique challenges as the Panthers made a run to the Class 8A state title.

South Tampa Patch takes a look back at the 2011 Plant High football season as the Panthers stormed their way to the Class 8A state championship: Aug. 26 — MIAMI COLUMBUS 35, PLANT 7: Without a power running back or a Division I recruit at quarterback, many overlooked the Panthers early in 2011. A preseason drubbing at the hands of Miami's Christopher Columbus took them off the radar completely. Sept. 2 — PLANT 34, JESUIT 20: They bounced back with a win in the regular season opener, rushing for more than 300 yards and five touchdowns. Senior athlete Antonio Crawford leading the way with eight carries for 140 yards and two touchdowns, and junior running back Wes Bullock also scored twice. "We remembered what it was like to have fun playing …

Plant High Football Rocks Miramar 31-20 For 8A State Crown

The Panthers captured the Class 8A state championship Saturday in Orlando.

ORLANDO — The Plant High Panthers are state champs once more. Plant dug out a blistering 31-20 win Saturday night against a resilient Miramar squad in the Class 8A state championship at the Citrus Bowl. The Panthers led 24-7 at the half but were staring at a slim 24-20 lead when they turned the ball over at the Miramar 1-yard line. The Panther defense answered the bell and nearly had back-to-back sacks for safeties until junior linebacker Mitchell Wright knocked the ball of the Miramar's quarterback's hands, and senior linebacker Tate Rodgers jumped on it in the end zone to lock the score in at 31-20. The Panthers now have captured three state titles in the last four years. Stay tuned to South Tampa Patch for more coverage and photos from …

Plant High Football Set to Go for Fourth State Title Against Miramar

The new-look Panthers are in another familiar position, looking to pounce on yet another state title as they head to Orlando for Saturday's Class 8A championship.

The Plant High Panthers (13-1) are no strangers to state title games. Saturday night's Class 8A football final against Miramar (13-0) in Orlando will be Plant's second consecutive appearance and fourth in the last five state title games. They know what it tastes like to lose one, they know what it tastes like to win one, and they do not want to lose another one. "I have the state runner-up trophy from last year set up in the locker room so that everyone can see it when they walk in," said Panthers head coach Robert  Weiner. The 36 graduating seniors on the team do not want to leave Plant with back-to-back runner-up finishes. However, another program of similar success and prestige stands in their way. Miramar won a state title two years …

Plant Panthers Shred Senators 26-7 to Advance to State Football Finals

Plant High got past Duncan Fletcher to advance to its fourth straight state final.

It was a death by a thousand cuts. The Plant High football dominated the Class 8A state semifinal against Duncan Fletcher on Friday night, rolling to a 26-7 win and earning a trip to Orlando to play for the state title. The host Panthers (13-1) stacked up three field goals to go into the half up 9-0. They came out in the second half and ratcheted up the slicing even more, scoring two touchdowns and another field goal. The lone Fletcher touchdown came in meaningless time in the fourth quarter. "It was kind of like a slow death," said Panthers head coach Robert Weiner. "It was like we injected them with poison and it took two-and-a-half hours to take its full effect." With the win, the Panthers move on to the Class 8A state finals, where …

Plant Football Faces Duncan Fletcher with Shot at Returning to State Finals

The Panthers host the Class 8A state semifinals this Friday.

Tell the doubters to hold their breath — at least until about 11:30 p.m. Friday night. The Panthers stand on the precipice of their fourth consecutive state finals appearance. The knocks on this year's team were: Answer No. 1: Enter junior Wes Bullock. While roughly half the size of Wilder, Bullock has all the heart and drive. Wilder gained more than 1,600 yards to Bullock's 1,000. However, it took Wilder 214 touches to Bullock's 142. Their yards per carry averages are very close: Wilder 7.54, Bullock 7.02. Bullock is not by himself, either. Senior athlete Antonio Crawford has contributed more than 500 yards and averages better than 10 yards per carry, and junior backup quarterback Aaron Banks has contributed almost 300 yards so far. And …
