Tampa Icon Freddie Solomon Memorialized

The former University of Tampa and NFL star and Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office employee was remembered at Monday's memorial service, TBO.com reports.

Former University of Tampa football great and Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office employee Freddie Solomon was honored at a memorial service Monday morning in Tampa, TBO.com reports. Solomon, who played on two Super Bowl-winning teams with the NFL's San Francisco 49ers, died on Feb. 13 of complications from colon and liver cancer. He was 59. Solomon was beloved for his work with Tampa-area children as a community relations coordinator for the sheriff's office. HCSO named its Freddie Solomon Annex in Ybor City in his honor last month. Freddie Solomon Memorial Service Set

The Tampa football legend and Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office employee will be memorialized on Monday, Feb. 20, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church.

A memorial service is planned for Monday, Feb. 20, for Freddie Solomon, the Tampa sports legend and longtime employee of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, who lost his fight with colon cancer this week. The service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 5225 N. Himes Ave., Tampa. Solomon, 59, starred as a quarterback at the University of Tampa and went on to win two Super Bowls with the NFL's San Francisco 49ers. He is also fondly remembered for his work in more than 20 years in community relations with the sheriff's office, where he took part in back-to-school events, Christmas programs, Family Fun Days and football camps and clinics for area kids. Tampa's Freddie Solomon Dies at 59

The local football legend, NFL standout and community coordinator for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has lost his battle with cancer, TBO.com reports.

Freddie Solomon, a former University of Tampa quarterback and NFL standout who spent more than 20 years working in community relations with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, has died, TBO.com reports. He was 59. Solomon died Monday afternoon after a nine-month battle with colon and liver cancer, the website reported, citing family friend George Levy. He had been hospitalized on Feb. 4. The South Carolina native finished 12th in the Heisman Trophy balloting after his senior season at UT in 1974, then spent 11 seasons in the NFL, winning two Super Bowls with the San Francisco 49ers as a wide receiver.
