Local Ron Paul Supporters Remain Optimistic

Those who favor the Texas congressman gathered at the Copper Top Pub in Temple Terrace to watch the election results.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney might have taken Florida, but that doesn’t mean Ron Paul supporters are counting out the Texas congressman. Paul Fosse of Citrus Park compared Paul’s campaign to a football game. “Very few football teams quit after the first three minutes,” he said. “They keep going. It seems kind of silly to give up after four states.” Fosse helped organize a Ron Paul Watch Party Tuesday evening at the Copper Top Pub in Temple Terrace using meetup.com and Facebook. About 50 people watched TV news stations report Florida’s election results. Paul hovered around 7 percent of the vote. “We’d be happier if he was in double digits,” Fosse said, “but what’s great is to see the enthusiasm of the supporters.” Young and…

KittenJuggler, I share your feelings about RON PAUL, the only candidate who has read and believes in the United States Constitution. HOWEVER... If he is NOT selected as the Republican Candidate for the General Election.... realize that your vote will likely be "One less for Republicans, one more for Leftist Democrats - NO ONE will notice your (Valid) objection to "the way it is". Romney Wins Florida GOP Primary; Hillsborough Republicans React

Mitt Romney earns a convincing victory over Newt Gingrich and other Republican nominees in Florida's Presidential Preference Primary.

Mitt Romney won the Florida Presidential Preference Primary on Tuesday, earning the state's 50 delegates and distancing himself from Newt Gingrich as the Republican frontrunner for 2012. The Associated Press projected Romney's commanding victory shortly after 8 p.m. when the final polls closed in Florida's Panhandle. The former Massachusetts governor had taken 46 percent of the vote to 31 percent for Gingrich after returns from 99 percent of the polls were in. Rick Santorum had 13 percent, and Ron Paul 7 percent. "Florida, you're the best," a victorious Romney told a crowd gathered at his primary night celebration at the downtown Tampa Convention Center. Reactions to Romney's win were mixed among local Republicans. "I was surprised he won …

It's very sad that we've ended up with Romney as our GOP candidate. Huntsman, who I respect somewhat and who is another Republican, looked at the way Romney shifts positions over and over depending on the political winds and called him a "perfectly lubricated weathervane". It's easy to use Google to find this if there's any doubt it's true. Romney has flip-flopped on about everything..... …   more ›

South Tampa Voters Head to the Polls

Some South Tampa registered Republicans headed to cast their votes on their way to work early this morning, Jan. 31.

As today’s 2012 Presidential Preference Primary polls opened at 7 a.m. in Hillsborough County, South Tampa registered Republicans headed out to cast their votes for the GOP candidate they think is best suited to beat President Obama in the fall. In some Palma Ceia and Bayshore Gardens’ polling places, the flow of voters has been steady throughout the morning. Most folks headed to the polls on their way to work, rushing to their cars after casting their votes, too pressed for time to leave any comments. “I voted for Mitt Romney,” said Doug McCree before entering his SUV at Precinct 112 on Bayshore Boulevard. “I thought he was the best candidate on the ballot.”

Light Turnout at Hillsborough Polls This Morning

Voting in the Florida Presidential Preference Primary has only been going on for a few hours.

While turnout at Hillsborough County’s polls has been sparse this morning, the supervisor of elections office predicts a strong turnout overall. Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections Earl Lennard told CNN on Tuesday morning that early voting and vote by mail totals have already exceeded levels from 2008, the last presidential election year. Lennard said he wouldn’t be surprised if he had a 40 percent turnout in Hillsborough. “If history is an indicator … I get the feeling we’re going to have a good, strong, robust turnout,” Lennard told the network. Even so, Lennard’s office reported that about 18 percent of eligible voters had cast their ballot as of 2:30 p.m. today, based on 10 sample precents around the county. The polls remain …

Expect Blue Skies on Primary Day

Rain not expected to hinder South Tampa voters today.

Republican voters should expect smooth sailing at the polls today — at least as far as the weather is concerned. According to forecasters at the National Weather Service’s Ruskin office, South Tampa residents can expect a partly cloudy day with highs in the upper 70s and lows around 50. Rain isn’t in the forecast, said meteorologist Richard Rude. Rude said the rest of the week is shaping up to be nice, as well. Wednesday’s weather is expected to nearly mirror Tuesday’s, but highs could climb a bit. Inland areas may see highs in the low 80s on Wednesday. A slight chance of rain does creep into the picture on Thursday. Rude says chances for rain will only come in at 20 percent and they’ll stick around through the weekend. For a complete look…

Gingrich Rally Targeted Undecided Florida Republicans

Today's rally was a last-minute push to get undecided voters into Newt Gingrich's camp.

With less than 24 hours before polls open for Florida's Republican primary some voters remained in the balance about which candidate to support. Carrollwood resident Judy Burns said deciding on which Republican candidate to cast her vote for has been harder than in previous years. "It's been really hard to figure out who to support," Burns said. But Newt Gingrich's stance on abolishing capital gains taxes brought Burns out to the Tampa International Jet Center where Gingrich held a grassroots rally on Monday afternoon. "I trade in stocks and have a couple homes here," Burns said. "So it hurts me in a lot of different ways. I always thought a flat tax would be more fair." Burns isn't alone. People like John Leach stood in line waiting to …

Gingrich's Song Choice During Tampa Visit Gets Him in Hot Water

The GOP presidential hopeful has been served with a cease and desist notice for his use of the song "How You Like Me Now?" during a campaign stop, Rolling Stone reports.

Newt Gingrich is in trouble over his campaign's choice in music during a Tampa rally last week. Gingrich has been ordered to stop using the song "How You Like Me Now?" after the band Heavy caught wind it was used during Monday's campaign stop at The River of Tampa Bay Church in Mango, Rolling Stone reports. "The GOP presidential hopeful was served a cease and desist notice from Third Side Music, the Montreal-based publishing company that owns the rights to the song," according to Rolling Stone. Gingrich used the 2009 hit from the British band during last week's rally, prompting the Heavy to post a profane message in response on their Facebook page. Gingrich is scheduled to appear at a Monday afternoon rally in Tampa with former GOP …

Also scheduled to attend are former GOP candidate Herman Cain and Michael Reagan, son of President Ronald Reagan and a former radio host. Gingrich and two of his fellow Republican candidates, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum, have been campaigning around Tampa Bay and across Florida in advance of Tuesday's Presidential Preference Primary.
