Chad Johnson, chef at South Tampa's SideBern's, was recognized by the Hillsborough County Board of Commissioners on Wednesday for his recent nomination for a 2012 James Beard Foundation award. Johnson was a semifinalist for the Best Chef: South award, presented annually by the nationally recognized foundation. Also recognized Wednesday were two other local nominees for James Beard Foundation Awards: Richard Gonzmart of Ybor City's Columbia Restaurant, a semifinalist for Outstanding Restaurateur honors, and Greg Baker of Seminole Heights' The Refinery, also a semifinalist for Best Chef: South. Chad Johnson wasn't among the list of semifinalists in the "Best Chef: South" category.
The James Beard Foundation has announced its list of semifinalists for its 2012 awards recognizing America's top chefs, and Chad Johnson of South Tampa's SideBern's didn't make the cut. Johnson, announced last month as a nominee for the prestigious culinary honor, wasn't among the five finalists for the "Best Chef: South" award who were announced Monday. Johnson wasn't the only Tampa-area nominee who got snubbed. Greg Baker of Seminole Heights' The Refinery also missed the cut in the same category, and Richard Gonzmart of Ybor City's famed Columbia Restaurant fell short in the "Outstanding Restaurateur" category. A South Tampa chef has been nominated for a prestigious James Beard Foundation Award, given annually to the nation's finest chefs and restaurants. Chad Johnson, executive chef of SideBern's, is a semifinalist for the foundation's "Best Chef: South" award, the organization announced Tuesday in its blog. SideBern's, 2208 W.
