In Contrast to Downtown Tampa, Convention Has Charlotte Businesses Booming

Tampa's crowds never brought vendors the big bucks, but Charlotte is off to a strong start.

Convention crowds may have been a no-show for the most part downtown at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, but they're already out in force for Charlotte's Democratic National Convention, which officially kicks off Tuesday. A walk around the rain-soaked restaurants near Charlotte Convention Center on Monday found steady lines of people spending money. "I'm happy so far," said Bob Morrison, owner of the "The Sandwich Club," a takeout food shop which opened in 1996. "I'm just hoping it stays like this." "Today was great," said Marlys Sielsky, chief hospitality officer for Matt's Chicago Dog. "It exceeded expectations." In Tampa, business owners lamented last week that, "We åwere told this would be our Christmas. Instead we have …

While Some Businesses Suffer During RNC, Hattricks Scores

The bar is doing well because of a partnership with the RNC to host private parties for Anheuser-Busch and Honeywell.

It looks like a war zone out front of well-known watering hole Hattricks Tavern.  Concrete barriers are set up. Chain-link fence lines Franklin Street. And myriad law enforcement stand garrison at what is the entrance into the convention zone just outside the bar's front door. The obstacles would not bode well for most businesses, but not Hattricks. Latisha Heffernan, owner of the popular pub, said she leased the space to the RNC for the week. She is hosting private parties for Anheuser-Busch and Honeywell. The deal insulated her unlike other downtown Tampa restaurants who are suffering from the lack of business. “It’s been good for us,” Heffernan said. “My place is their place now.” See Also: Republican National Convention in Tampa If it …

Political Button Sales Slow Surrounding RNC

A lack of crowds is slowing sales of the pin-able political memorabilia.

Buttons brought Eric Cannon to Tampa. Cannon, from St. Louis, travels the country selling them. This week the theme is Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan with a hint of Ron Paul. Selling buttons is how Cannon makes ends meet. He started selling sports-themed buttons with a friend about eight years ago and now hawks all kinds. Cannon said he can typically sell between 100 to 150 buttons at $5 each. Although this week sales are a bit slower. “There’s no crowds. Downtown Tampa’s just not that big a place,” Cannon said. “It’s sparse at best.” From button sales, Cannon compares the Republican ticket this election year to the last, where running mate Sarah Palin was more popular than ticket leader John McCain. “People are more excited about Ryan than Romney…

Downtown Restaurants Don’t See Increase in Business

An expected boon to downtown Tampa businesses because of the RNC is a bust, restaurateurs said Tuesday.

It was supposed to be like a Super Bowl shot in the arm for downtown Tampa restaurants who expected throngs of eaters during the four-day Republican National Convention. The city made much ado about preparation for the event pouring money into landscaping and road repairs. But it was a virtual ghost town Tuesday during what would be the start of the busy lunchtime rush. Lynn Pham just hopes to break even this week. “I just don’t see it,” she said. Pham, owner of Bamboozle Cafe on Tampa Street, ordered extra food for the week. She kept on additional help and even was open on Sunday for the crowds she anticipated. But no one came. Sure there was Tropical Storm Isaac but the storm passed far from Tampa, Pham said. Between the storm and the …

Downtown Shop Owner Hopes Bad Weather Goes Away, Crowds Come

Tropical Storm Isaac is putting a damper on the economic impact of the RNC.

Millions of dollars are supposed to be thrown around in Tampa this week by visitors in town for the Republican National Convention, but Tropical Storm Isaac's presence off the Gulf Coast is spoiling the spending spree thus far. Beverly's Gift Shop downtown has stocked its entire floor with RNC related gear, from t-shirts and hats to Barack Obama punching bags, but the best day of business for owner Rich Moore was last Friday as delegates hide inside the Tampa Convention Center and their hotels avoiding the weather. "I don't know what to expect," Moore said. "The problem right now is that we haven't seen an influx of people, just the locals picking up RNC stuff last Friday. The weather hasn't helped, but they say there is no more rain …
