Continuing my education in sports during the spring cleaning season.
Last Friday my husband took my sons and I to a game at the Florida Auto Exchange Stadium in Dunedin. It made me realize how great the Tampa Bay area is to live in and raise children! Especially for a batball lover like I am. In case you missed my article in October, I am a new sports fan. I became one after I got to watch my husband’s favorite team, the St. Louis Red Cardinals, win the 2011 America’s Cup. As I explained in October, it took me a while to understand batball because sports vernacular is complicated, intricate and masculine. But I am a quick learner, so after a couple weeks in the fall and one game this spring, l think I can call myself a legitimate sports enthusiast. As I said before, I believe it is important for me to show …

Nourish the body and spine with Cat and Cow postures.
Let’s cover three postures that frequently are used together, creating a body vinyasa (synchronization of breath and movement). In Yoga 101: The Body Vinyasa, we discussed how to connect breath and movement, and in Yoga 101: The Sunbird we introduced the table foundation. Because they create stability and grace, Table, Cat and Cow postures are found in many vinyasa yoga classes, and also work well together with Child’s pose. Table, Cat and Cow mirror the basic flexion and extension movement of the spine. When you create the right balance of effort and ease, this sequence has great potential to nourish your body and spine. Like lots of other asana, Cat and Cow are inspired by animals, and table mimics an everyday object. In Table, the …

A Tiny duck tale.
One evening my children and I were driving away from a strip mall, and in front of our car waddled a mama duck and 13 babies. The itty-bitty ducklings followed their mom in a bumper car huddle — all except one, even smaller than the rest, who trailed far behind about to die from exhaustion. My boys named this last one Tiny, and every couple of minutes the mama had to stop to let Tiny catch up. We watched the ducks for a bit before we started to drive away, but my youngest cried that he never got to say good-bye, so I turned the car around to let him. By the time we got back, the ducks were gone, but I noticed something moving in the parking spot where they had just been. Oh no, it was Tiny. He was lying on his back flapping his nubby wings…

In honor of Mother’s Day this Sunday, it seems appropriate to cover Balasana, or child’s posture.
Whether or not we are close to our mothers, bringing our bodies down to Mother Earth helps reminds us that we are a tribe of humans and children of the universe. I remind my students every time we meet on the mat that Balasana posture is a great posture to practice when we need a rest. It also can give us an intermission to recapture our consistency of breath (samavritti), while helping us connect with ourselves. In the yoga classroom across the world, child’s posture sends a universal message. Without saying a word, child’s posture tells the teacher that you are listening to your body and taking it easy today. Child’s posture not only helps us reconnect with ourselves, but it also will help with flexibility in the knees, the hips and …

This week in quotes on South Tampa Patch.
Kathlee672: “Is this a joke? I've had more (and better) craft beer in a Michigan town of 2000.” - Is Tampa Bay Worthy of the BeerCity USA Title? Emc: “Has anyone with such an implementation tracked its use? How many and how often are residents referring to these maps? Does it make them feel safer? Is that the point of public crime maps?” - Tampa Police Launch Crime Mapping Website. Loreli: “Work with volunteers, fosters, rescues and any and all means to make Hillsborough a no kill shelter. Wish all the Florida counties would adopt a NO KILL policy!!” - How Can We Save 90% of Animals at the Shelter? Holly Schwarzmann: “Cigar City Brewery is a great place to go for craft beers. The tasting room has a nice, laid-back vibe and you can sample …

Mrs. Cheap gives you permission to not give goody bags at kids' birthday parties.
Dear Mrs. Cheap, I don’t feel like spending $500 on an expensive professional cake, invitations, entertainment, and goody bags for my daughter’s birthday party, do I have to? Also must I include every member of her kindergarten class? That is 18 kids plus their families. I wanted a small party but I don’t want to be rude or cheap. - Not Cheap but Not Frivolous. Dear Not Cheap but Not Frivolous, What have we done to kids’ birthday parties? Doesn’t anyone realize that we have been fooled by the decadent marketing from the '00s and by narcissistic mom-blogs celebrating how beautifully they live their lives and that they have time to write about it. (I really think these women are trying to look like they have the perfect family to hide the …

Chakravakasana is such a pretty name, and when done with grace and breath will provide many benefits, too.
Yogis were bird lovers. There are lots of postures named after birds, such as pigeon, eagle, crow, and heron. One of the great things about Sun Bird and its modifications is that it is for beginners and advanced students. With regular practice it will help with balance and build strength in the belly, back, wrists, elbows, shoulders, neck and mind. It’s a full-body stabilizer, like down dog, plank and staff postures. Sun Bird will teach you how to engage and build strength in the pelvic floor (mulabandha) and the abdominals (uddiyanabandha). It also has the potential to massage and strengthen our kidneys, adrenal glands and all of the abdominal organs. However, if you suffer from any wrist, knee, back, shoulder or elbow injuries, I …
