Robinson High Wrestler Named State Champ

Luis Peguero won the state title at the finals Feb. 16 at The Lakeland Center.

For the first time since 1974, Robinson High School has a state wrestling champ.

During the state wrestling championships Feb. 16 at The Lakeland Center in Lakeland, junior Luis Peguero captured the 1A 170-pound state title with a hard-fought 3-1 overtime victory over Tampa Prep's Nick Mosco.

Tommy Montero, the Robinson Knights' wrestling coach since 2001, was visibly moved when the match was called. Not only is Peguero his first state champion but he's known the student athlete since he was in diapers.

It was a hard-won victory for Peguero who was just shy of earning the title last year as a sophomore. He placed second at state in 2012.

But Montero and fellow coach Sean Patrick said they knew Peguero was on his way to a state title this year after sweeping the county and regional tournaments.
