RNC Protest Ground Rules Won't Cover Harbor Island, Davis Islands, Parts of Hyde Park

The proposed changes brought before Tampa City Council on Monday would shrink the "Event Zone" area closer to downtown, the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Harbour Island, Davis Islands and parts of Hyde Park won't be included in the area of Tampa that would be covered by ground rules for protests outside the Republican National Convention.

The proposed changes brought before City Council by city attorneys Monday would shrink the area and change its name from "Clean Zone" to "Event Zone," the Tampa Bay Times reports.

The proposed Event Zone rules would include a ban on weapons and things that could be used as weapons — pieces of wood, metal or hard plastic that could be used as clubs, aerosol cans, and so on — on public property, according to the Times.

"Groups of 50 or more gathering in a park inside the Event Zone would be able to apply for a permit that allows an all-day gathering," the Times reports.

City officials proposed scaling back the zone to an area closer to downtown and excluding areas north of Interstate 275 or Interstate 4, as well as parts of West Tampa and Hyde Park west of North Boulevard and South Boulevard.
