Garbage Fee Increase Approved by City Council

The new rates would go into effect on April 1.

Tampa City Council voted 5-2 to increase the fees that residents pay for garbage collection. According to an article on TBO.com. Council members Frank Reddick and Mary Mulhern voted against the increase.

The increase would go into effect and would raise customer's monthly bills by 15%.

"This is ridiculous," said Susan Long, a past president of the Old Seminole Heights Neighborhood Association, according to the Tampa Bay Times. She said the city should explore privatizing collection, like in unincorporated Hillsborough County, the newspaper reported.

"If the county can do it with private haulers," she said, "we should, too."

Why are the fees being raised again. Everyone is cutting back on every thing. But the City Council seem to be in a position to raise taxes whenever they want to. Are they being paid off by these contract companies. What's the justification? Please investigate. Thanks.................

The city should use some of the Republican Convention money to buy a few new trash trucks instead of amored tanks for the police department. Also since the brush site on Mahattan has been closed they have a front end loader and a fairly new modular building parked there doing nothing. They should also sell the site for commercial use. This may eliminate 1 of the 5 rate increases

Not Happy. As a single resident who consistently recycles & composts, I only utilize trash pickup 1-2 times monthly. I already feel the $25 monthly fee is outrageous for a service I rarely use. I would rather see the City eliminate a service day Nov-April when the cooler weather doesn't cook the trash in the cans.
