UPDATE: Police Investigating Fire, Death at South Tampa House

Police have a person of interest in the suspicious house fire at 6709 W. Interbay Blvd.

The Tampa Police Department's Homicide-Arson unit is investigating a suspicious house fire and death in South Tampa early Thursday morning.

Tampa Fire Rescue responded to a call reporting a trash fire in the area of Interbay Boulevard and South Dale Mabry Boulevard. When they responded to the scene at 1:45 a.m. they encountered the burning two-story building at 6709 W. Interbay Blvd., Tampa Fire Rescue spokesman Capt. Lonnie Benniefield said.

After a primary search, they pulled 65-year-old Richard Lee Blackman from the living room of the house. According to police spokesperson Laura McElroy, Blackman there lived alone. There were no other injuries reported.

Blackman was taken to Tampa General Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The cause of death is still under investigation.

A 911 call came from a witness at a nearby convenience store. Tampa police obtained surveillance video from the store that shows a four-door white car with dark tinted windows in the parking lot around the time of the incident.

Police are working to enhance the video in an attempt to identify the vehicle's license plate.

The white female driver walked in and out of the store several times. During one visit, she is wearing a pink bandana on her head. She appears in the video a second time without the bandana. The woman told the store clerk that she was from Lakeland.

The driver is not a suspect, but is a considered a person of interest who may have information to help solve the case.

Detectives want to interview the woman about the incident and urge anyone who recognizes the car or driver to contact the Tampa Police Department at 813-231-6130.
