Harbour Island Bank Robbery Under Investigation

Tampa Police Department searching for suspect in robbery at Sun Trust Bank on Harbour Island Boulevard.

Detectives are investigating a bank robbery that occurred shortly after 7 a.m. Friday on Harbour Island, the Tampa Police Department reports.

No one was injured, and detectives are still searching for the suspect in the robbery at Sun Trust Bank, 800 Harbour Island Blvd., according to a news release.

According to the release, the suspect surprised the bank manager as he approached the bank's front door around 7:12 a.m., implying that he had a gun. When the two went inside, the manager hit a silent alarm button, notifying police, who arrived within minutes.

"The arrival scared the suspect and he ran out of the back door without any money," a Tampa Police spokesperson wrote in the release.

For two hours, traffic on and off of Harbour Island was restricted while officers searched for the suspect.  All vehicles leaving Harbor Island were searched and Marine Patrol also searched the water in area. Rampello Elementary School was on lockdown, the release said.

The suspect was described as a white male in his early 30s, approximately 5-foot-10 and about 160 pounds. He wore a black or blue hooded windbreaker with a white logo and jeans.
