Gasparilla Results In At Least 68 Arrests

'As a result of the zero tolerance education campaign, officers did not encounter younger teenagers under the influence as in previous years,' TPD officials say.

The invasion is over and the numbers are coming in: Tampa Police Department officials say 68 people were arrested during Saturday's Gasparilla celebration.

TPD also issued 131 alcohol citations, according to a media release.

The numbers, issued at 9:20 p.m. Jan. 26, are not final, TPD spokeswoman Laura McElroy said in an email.

Charges for those arrested included misdemeanors such as disorderly conduct, petty theft, possession of marijuana, as well as one charge of giving alcohol to a minor.  Three people were charged with felonies: two fictitious IDs and one battery on a law enforcement officer, according to TPD.

Thirty-one of the arrests reported thus far were for underage drinking.

Two juveniles were arrested, according to the latest report. One was for underage drinking, the other was for theft.

"As a result of the zero tolerance education campaign, officers did not encounter younger teenagers under the influence as in previous years," a media release stated.
