Downtown Library Offers Free Programs

From computer classes for adults to a costume party for kids, the John F. Germany Public Library in downtown provides a wide range of free events throughout the month.

Check out these free events and classes taking place in January at the , 900 N. Ashley Dr.

Motion Commotion on Thursdays: Jan. 5, 12, 19 and 26, at 11 a.m.

This fun and very interactive preschool music and movement program will shake out some sillies. For children ages 18 months to 5 years along with their caregivers.

New Year’s Resolution: Learn A New Language on Saturday, Jan. 7, at 10.15 a.m.

Thinking about learning a new language in 2012? Let the library help keep that resolution. Learn about Mango languages and other resources available through the library. For adults.

LEGO My Library! on Saturday, Jan. 7, at 2 p.m.

Kids use LEGO building blocks to build a fun, interactive and creative project. The library provides the LEGOs; kids provide the imagination! For children in grades 1 through 5.

eBooks and eReaders on Saturday, Jan. 14, at 10.15 a.m.

The library will present a demonstration of the Overdrive Media Console and Adobe Digital Editions. Learn how to check out and download eBooks to a PC or eReader. For adults. Participants must register in person after 10 a.m. Limit of 12 participants.

The Seminole Wars on Saturday, Jan. 14, at 11 a.m.

Jerry Morris, living history interpreter and author of Fort King Road, discusses Florida's Second Seminole War with examples of an 1835 United States soldier's uniform, an 1816 flint lock musket, and other soldier equipment and rations. For adults.

Researching 19th Century Florida Records on Saturday, Jan. 14, at noon.

Learn how to find and use 19th century Florida records of federal and state censuses, military service, Florida territorial papers, Spanish land claims, farm descriptions, immigration and naturalization, marriage, wills, voter lists, tax rolls, newspapers, photos and more. For adults.

Super Saturday: Pirates And Princesses Party on Saturday, Jan. 14, at 2 p.m.

Celebrate Gasparilla at the annual Pirates and Princesses Party with guest storyteller Katie Adams. Listen to pirate tales and decorate a crown or pirate hat. Pirate and princess costumes are encouraged. For children and families.

Back To School Success: Resources For Adult Students on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 2 p.m.

This program teaches the best ways, using websites and apps, to find an online college program, search for scholarships, and find tutoring resources. Going back to school has never been easier. Basic mouse and keyboard skills are required. For adults.

Cloud Storage on Tuesday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m.

Learn about the latest trend in computing: Cloud storage. For adults. Limit of 12 participants.
