MP3 Players for Dogs and Cats?

The folks behind a Tampa Kickstarter campaign are hoping pet lovers agree the time has come to tailor music for pets.

Pampered pets are about to become even more so if a fundraising effort out of Tampa gets off the ground.

PetTunes.com has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise $196,000 to fund the launch of what it’s calling the PetPhone. This combination music player and headset is designed to fit especially into the ears of cats and dogs, allowing owners to select their critters’ favorite tunes for them to listen to during stressful situations.

“Music can provide a state of calm for your pets during stressful situations or as a source of entertainment under normal situations,” the campaign page states. “Many attentive owners have noticed that soothing music can help to relax away their pets’ anxiety during thunderstorms, fireworks, vacuuming or visits from unusual guests.”

The PetPhone’s unique styling also includes earpieces that are meant to fit in pets’ L-shaped ear canals, the site says. Operating at a low volume so as not to damage pets’ hearing, the device enables owners to create a custom playlist of tunes.

More information about PetTunes is available on the company’s website where it’s stated that PetTunes believes “music is for EVERY soul.”

The campaign has received only two donations so far, but runs through Aug. 18. PetPhones are being manufactured in China, according to the campaign, and retail online for $99.98 for preorders only. The item has an anticipated release date of Aug. 31.
