RNC to Wreak Havoc With School Buses

School bus schedules on South Tampa's islands will be effected by the Republican National Convention.

Next month's Republican National Convention will cause school bus drivers whose routes go to Davis and Harbour Islands some headaches, but bus routes and contingency plans are being reviewed county wide to ensure that kids in Hillsborough get to school safely and on time.

School officials are working on alternate routes, which drivers will have to take a practice run through before the school year begins, but cannot finalize anything yet because the city is still working on defining road closures. Backup routes will also be in place if there is a problem.

Parents will be notified of changes to their children's routes or pickup times, which may occur earlier than usual according to an article in the Tampa Bay Times.

The district will also have uniformed security officers on some busses during the event which will be matched by additional security on their way to class at schools close to the event zone.

One school, the Rampello K-8 Downtown Partnership School, will close due to its close proximity to the event.

Some routes may be split if one bus gets too far behind, causing the district to hire enough drivers to have some on call.
