Tampa Preservation Offers Historic Homes Workshop

Owners of historic homes will learn the intricacies of restoring and caring for their homes at the workshop Saturday, April 27.

Residents interested in learning more about the care and upkeep of their historic homes are invited to attend the Historic Homes Workshop presented by the nonprofit Tampa Preservation Inc.

The workshop, featuring presentations by experts on renovating and restoring historic homes, will be held Saturday, April 27 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 1706 W. Cypress St., Tampa.

The theme of this year's workshop is "Maintaining the Old House." It will include 12 sessions offering help on restoring wood windows, foundation and roof repair, exterior details and remodeling a period bath.

The highlight will be a session at Schiller's Architectural Salvage in Tampa where homeowners can explore the use of salvaged materials.

“We get a lot of calls from people looking for professionals to help them with their historic homes, from design issues to contractors to do the work,” said Becky Clarke, president of Tampa Preservation. “This event showcases local experts who will share their knowledge and, hopefully, give away some of their industry secrets.”

A vendor display area at the workshop will allow homeowners to meet and discuss their home projects with preservation-related businesses such as Wood Window Makeover and Historic Shed, a provider of custom sheds for historic homes.

Admission to the workshop is free for Tampa Preservation members and $5 for nonmembers.
