Davis Islands Resident to Bicycle Across Country to Raise Awareness of AIDS

Jeff Herold will take part in the Ride for Hope Coast to Coast June 16-26.

A Davis Islands cycling enthusiast is preparing to embark on a cross-country journey to help millions of children orphaned by the AIDS epidemic in sub-Sahara Africa.

Jeff Herold will be among 40 amateur riders to participate in the 10-day Ride For Hope Coast to Coast. The 3,271-mile relay from Orange County, Calif., to Daytona Beach will take place June 16-26.

The riders will pass through cities across the U.S., raising money for volunteers who minister to orphans and other vulnerable children infected and affected by HIV and AIDS.

Herold is retired from Shell Oil Lubricants. Although he considers himself a beginning cyclist, he said he was motivated to join the ride because he lost his sister to HIV. He hopes to raise $10,000 for Christ’s Hope International. To date he's raised $2,865.

Every day, 3,800 people die from AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. It’s also projected there will be 30-40 million orphans in sub-Sahara Africa by 2015.
