Construction to Begin at Roy Jenkins Pool on Davis Islands

The pool closed years ago, but city officials say it will re-open in April of 2014.

In 2008, the Roy Jenkins Pool closed due to health and safety concerns. Five years later, the doors of the building at 154 Columbia Drive on Davis Islands have yet to re-open.

Soon, that will change.

At 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 22, Mayor Bob Buckhorn and community leaders plan to unveil a sign indicating construction being underway at the pool.

Renovations will include replacing the pool's operating systems and piping, deck, restrooms and pool shell, according to a news release from the City of Tampa. The historic facade of the building will also be renovated, with completion expected by April of 2014. After that, the pool will be open seasonally during the summer.

Pillar Construction Group is renovating the pool. The renovations will cost $2.25 million, and will be paid for out of the Community Improvement Tax. In addition, the Davis Island Civic Association authorized $500,000 to go towards the pool’s renovation.

“The renovation of this pool has been a community effort. We are making much-needed improvements so that the pool can be a safe and fun place for the entire Davis Island community to enjoy,” said Buckhorn in the news release. “Next summer, I expect there will be hundreds of kids learning to swim and playing with friends in Roy Jenkins Pool.”
