Channel District Gets New Urban Park

Mayor Bob Buckhorn dedicated Washington Street Park in the Channel District on Tuesday, Dec. 13.

Mayor Bob Buckhorn officially dedicated a new park in Tampa's Channel District on Tuesday, Dec. 13.

Washington Street Park, 118 N 12th St., is a half-acre nautical-themed park with an oversized sea grass sculpture, a lawn area, a dog run and a large canvas shade structure and plaza.

The design allows for gatherings of various sizes as well as individual pursuits.

“This is a place where people will come and gather, people will come and celebrate, people will come and exercise their dogs, people will come and meet their dates,” Mayor Buckhorn said. “Part of the urban experience is having public places where people can gather.”

The park is enhanced at night with special light features, including spot lights and LED fiber optic lights imbedded into the main entry columns.

Construction started in spring 2011, and the $815,000 project was funded with property taxes from the Channel District Community Redevelopment Area.
