5 Things You Can Do with the Family This Weekend

Here's a Patch roundup of fun things to do in the region.

SATURDAY

6:30 a.m. Zoo Run Run

  • Join Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo for the ninth annual Zoo Run Run, a 5K run/walk that winds through the Zoo and along the scenic Hillsborough River.  Children can enter a special "Fun Run" which follows the 5K.  Registration cost includes admission to the Zoo for the day for the entrant.  All Early Bird registrants are guaranteed a t-shirt; others available while supplies last.

  • Join Run Tampa for a free run along the Bayshore. They'll run from Patriot's Park (3000 Bayshore Blvd) to Ballast Point Park, then out to the end of the pier and back. That's about 5 miles, but it's easy to continue on toward downtown to get in lots more miles. This run is appropriate for any level, any distance. Go as far as you want, as fast as you want. If you don't want to go 5 miles, just turn around sooner. Patriot's Park has water but no restroom; however, restrooms and water fountain are at Ballast Point Par

11:30 a.m.

  • Learn about the history, mythology, and art of the Tampa Theatre, one of the country's best-preserved examples of grand movie-palace architecture. Built in 1926, the ornate theatre is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is a Tampa city landmark. Reservations requested for groups over 10.

SUNDAY

3 p.m.

  • The Tampa Theatre closes out its "Summer Classics" film series with a showing of the 1924 version of "Peter Pan." Cliff Shaffer provides live musical accompaniment to the film on the theater's Mighty Wurlitzer organ. Although this is a silent movie, the theater encourages the audience to come along to Never Never Land and cheer, gasp, laugh out loud and thrill to the special effects (as impressive today as they were back then).

6 p.m. Yoga in the Park

  • Downtown Tampa's beautiful new Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park is the perfect place for a free yoga class held on Sundays starting at 6:00 p.m.  Yoga in the Park is designed for people of all levels.  Beginners will enjoy experiencing the benefits of this growing practice. Experienced yoga class participates will love the intensity of the instructor.  Regardless of your level or experience with yoga, you're sure to enjoy the views of downtown's skyline, the Hillsborough River and the University of Tampa!
