The Right Fit Foundation recently announced its first annual $5,000 scholarship for Tampa-area high school students.
To qualify, students must be a U.S. citizen, a resident of Pasco or Hillsborough counties, and have a weighted high school GPA of 3.0 or higher. Applicants must also attend one of the Foundation’s free college admission and financial aid classes. Finalists may be interviewed. One scholarship will be awarded per year.
Independent college consultant Kenneth Albert created The Right Fit Foundation to provide free classes to the community on how to select the right college, how to maximize financial aid, and how to reduce the family's out-of-pocket expenses.
Inspired by his own experience of changing careers mid-life, he realized that students and their parents often fail when it comes to the hardest part of planning for college- getting the right fit to begin with.
A Certified Financial Planner professional, he also noticed the trend in students taking longer to complete college degrees, as well as accruing more student loan debt. He would write the book Finding the Right Fit: The Ultimate Guide to College in 2009 to help families navigate the college search process and help students choose their career path wisely.
This year, the foundation is offering a $5,000 college scholarship, giving preference to middle income families.
“These families often do not qualify for need-based financial aid and borrow more on average to pay for college,” Albert said. "The Right Fit Foundation is excited to help families that need it the most, and hope to expand the scholarship to $10,000 next year.”
Two college admission and financial aid classes will be offered in September at the Jimmie Keel Library. Students can register to attend a class at www.therightfitfoundation.org. The scholarship application is also available on the website. The deadline for application is January 15, 2013, and the winner will be notified March 15, 2013. The scholarship is a one-time award (non-renewable) and will be paid directly to the accredited four-year college or university the winner chooses to attend.
