Retired South Tampa Cardiologist Explores the Wicked Ways of the Heart with First Novel
Dr. Peter O. Knight will discuss his first novel "The Heart" at Inkwood Books on Sunday.
Six year ago, South Tampa cardiologist Dr. Peter O. Knight sat on a beach at sundown and wondered about the wicked ways of the heart.
When the sunset was over, he knew he wanted to write a book.
Inspired by real life situations and research on ancient Hebrew, Greek and Egyptian cultures, "The Heart" was released on Valentine’s Day this year.
"The heart is truly a vital organ, not only physically but also emotionally and spiritually,” said the 77-year-old Ballast Point resident and grandson of Tampa pioneer, businessman and lawyer Peter O. Knight, whom the airport is named after.
"The Heart" introduces readers to two fictional characters who come from very different walks of life.
When Gerald Morris' wife is forced to undergo a sudden heart transplant, he discovers and begins reading her personal journal, unexpectedly revealing her deepest and most twisted secrets. It is a tale of love, evil, betrayal and marital strife and is a journey of both physical and spiritual healing.
Through his first novel, Knight explores the intrinsic mechanisms of the heart in a human being on a physical, emotional and spiritual level.
Knight practiced cardiology and taught medicine for almost half a century and retired from the University of South Florida College of Medicine only last year.
“Who at my age would write a book?” he said smiling. “I wanted to encourage seniors to do something creative because this would keep you going, it would keep you moving, it would keep you active and involved.”
Does he have any plans for a second book?
“It crossed my mind, but doing this is enough for me right now,” he said.
