The 93-year-old Roy Jenkins Pool on Davis Islands "closed in 2008 for installation of a drain cover mandated by a federal drown-prevention law for public pools," according to TBO.com.

The local newspaper reports that the city plans to invest about $1.5 million to repair and restore the municipal pool at 154 Columbia Dr., but it won't do so unless Davis Islands residents contribute $500,000 from the neighborhood's recreation fund to help with the project.

Some Davis Islands’ residents do not agree with the proposed restoration that would make the pool shallower, thus hindering its use, TBO.com reports.

"This would eliminate activities such as teaching children to swim in deep water, learning to dive in from the side, lifesaving and scuba diving lessons, swim team practice, swim meets, deep water aerobic classes, and synchronized swimming (a popular activity at Roy Jenkins when it was offered a number of years ago)," Denise Cassedy, president of the Davis Islands Civic Association, said in a letter, TBO.com reports.

The newspaper reports that Santiago Corrada, the mayor's chief of staff, said that "for liability purposes, the city doesn't favor deep pools. City officials don't want to encourage diving and they worry about the safety of children in deep water."
