Two Rocket Launchers Turned In During Gun Buy Back Program

The swap was held over the weekend to get guns off of the streets.

SOUTH TAMPA, FL -- In exchange for cash and game tickets, Tampa Bay gun owners participated in "Operation Gun Swap" today in an effort by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office to get firearms off the streets.

In addition to run-of-the-mill firearms, authorities say two rocket launchers were also turned in during the swap.

The launchers were handed over at the Progress Village substation and at a Dover area location, according to a media release.

The launchers were inspected, and neither were loaded, the release said.

What do you think about rocket launchers being recovered during the swap? Tell us in the comments.

From the photo, one was a training device, for training infantry units when that style light anti-armor weapons were in use. It was inert and could never be used as a rocket launchers. Military surplus stores used to sell them as souvenirs. For ease of everyone's concern, military explosives, rockets, and grenades have been illegal to own or purchase since the National Firearms Act of 1934, updated again in 1968.

I was going to mention the same thing about the rocket launchers. besides being a good looking useless souvenir they are worth a few cents as light iron at the junk yard. At least this way they get somethin worth wile as they get rid of them. To some of us it brings back memories :-) Jimmy, Buzzards Bay, mASS, ( the state of confusion :-)

For those that were never in the military, just the idea of "rocket launcher" is scary enough.

All of this is based on being scared and being unaware of facts. For instance, there were a lot of people buying weapons at the two locations I went to.

Spent LAAW (light antitank assault weapon). Completely harmless unless used as a club to hit someone.

Training props about as dangerous as the cardboard rolls that Christmas wrapping paper comes on. Hey, but anything the media can falsely report to scare you into thinking there's a need for stricter gun laws, right? Nice try guys... Next.

That's the problem, most of these ninnys wouldn't know something dangerous if it were in their own hands. They can't grasp the fact that the person wielding the weapon is what makes it dangerous, regardless of what it looks like or what its particulars are. The amount of gun crimes in relation to guns owned is less than 1%. That number alone speaks volumes about our proud gunowners and their responsibility. Any moron can pickup a book and make a chemical weapon out of almost anything and nothing he buys will trip an alarm or alert someone. Said moron can do more damage in five minutes than almostg any gun he/she could buy. The liberal media can hoop-n-holler over the two "rocket launchers" all they want, the might as well have been the two largest clubs in the world for all the use they would've been.

It's actually WAY less than 1%. I calculated it earlier using 2010 data. It's closer to .01%, or a hundred times less than 1%. :)

There were two Civil War reenctments in Florida this past weekend, in which there were a multitude of firearms, including, GASP, FEAR, TERROR, cannons, rifles and pistols. And none of those guns went crazy and killed anyone. Imagine.

This story showing up again and again is a clear example of the press pushing a false agenda. A spent launch tube is harmless and is not a weapon, anymore than tripod is a camera.

Liberals view excessive spending and taxation as their true callings in life. An additional and equally offensive shortcoming of the Liberal philosophy is that unlike a Conservative who will simply not buy something or not do something if they don’t like it, a Liberal will seek to make that thing illegal – simply because – they themselves – disapprove of it. Inherently, this is saying that their personal moral judgement is superior to another persons, and that they have a right to impose their preferences on another.

While this is often the case, it's also true of many Conservatives with respect to religion—abortion, teaching certain things, gay marriage, etc. That's why I'm a Libertarian instead of a Republican.

Do these people realize how many of these launchers are out there? A lot of them played with by kids. There were two disposable launchers developed, the first was the M72 LAW and the other FIM 92. Shoot and throw away because a lot of GI’s were shot reloading the M20 3.5 inch Bazooka and it’s replacement the M67 90mm Recoilless Rifle. A lot of guys in the service kept these launchers as a keepsake because otherwise the tubes were tossed into a trash pile thus the term disposable launcher. If the people out there doing the buyback are bright enough to do recognize that these are disposable devices perhaps somebody needs to do some training to recognize these as what they are – THRASH.

Whoever turned them in was smarter than the people who buy them. Probably got them for a couple of dollars at a Surplus Store or Swap Meet and made some quick cash. I can't even think of how these could become weapons, except as a club. Some old S, just a different day from the press.

These are very worthwhile endeavors to protect the public. I have never actually been to one but I imagine a line of Bloods, Cripts, Hells Angels and other gang members lined up around the block, turning in their guns for game tickets. Warms the heart.

You're imagination is incorrect. It was a bunch of gun owners looking to sell their crap for more than it was worth, a bunch of people who are afraid of guns (and would only turn in to the police), and a bunch of buyers getting the good stuff from the line as best as they could.

Only 11/2541 or so were even stolen.

I am one of those liberals you were talking about. I have hunted and owned guns
all of my life. So ya see, not all liberals are for gun control. I think there are too many
controls now. When I was a lot younger I could walk into Walmart and buy an hand
gun and walk out with it in 10 minutes. I think this is the way it should be now.
I also have a milatary back ground and loved every minute of it.
So, don't link all Dems as radical gun control nuts. I have two gun safes full.
No one is going to take my guns away.
If you look, the republican have taken more of our right away than anyone.
We need to look at both parties for what they are, and not just for one point of
view.
Gun owner forever

Indeed. There are a large number of Democrats who own guns. Most everyone in my family owns a gun, and they usually vote Democrat.
