Mayor Bob Buckhorn Unveils Historical Monument Trail Honorees

The six honorees will have busts placed along the trail that winds around the riverwalk and along the Hillsborough River, according to city officials.

Mayor Bob Buckhorn, in partnership with the Friends of the Riverwalk, unveiled on Tuesday the six 2013 honorees whose busts will be placed along the Historical Monument Trail that will wind around Tampa’s Riverwalk along the Hillsborough River and Garrison Channel. 

The Historic Trail uses busts, statues and monuments to educate the public about significant events and noteworthy people that have shaped the history of Tampa and Hillsborough County.
 
“The Trail allows us to remember and honor those who were so committed and dedicated to moving our community forward,” said Mayor Buckhorn.  “As importantly, it is a place where our citizens not only connect along this incredible Riverwalk, but they will also be able to connect to one another through a shared history that has brought them to it.”
 
Chosen by a panel of Tampa historians and folklore experts appointed by the Friends of the Riverwalk, monuments to the inaugural six historical honorees were unveiled in 2012. 
 
The 2013 honorees are:

  • Cyril Blythe Andrews, newspaper entrepreneur and leader;
  • Cody Fowler, nationally acclaimed attorney known for his fight for justice and equality;
  • Kate V. Jackson, businesswoman, philanthropist, environmentalist and leader;
  • Peter O. Knight, attorney who shaped many of today's businesses and political institutions;
  • Paulina Pedroso, Cuban freedom organizer and civil rights leader; and,
  • Garfield Devoe Rogers, businessman, philanthropist and creator of Rogers Park.

Moving forward, the historian panel will continue to curate the Monument Trail, and the public will be asked to offer suggestions about additional historic figures as well as seminal events in Tampa and Hillsborough County’s history.
 
“Our goal is to preserve and honor the local people who created a lasting impact on Tampa,” said Steve Anderson, President of the Friends of the Riverwalk. “As we write down the most important notes in Tampa's history, the whole community should be a part of that.”
 
Noteworthy people chosen for a monument must be deceased for at least 15 years, have made a lasting positive impact on the history of Tampa, served or influenced the community, left a lasting legacy and resided in Tampa or Hillsborough County.
